A senior at Valencia High School who hopes to someday become a nurse, Silvia’s medical skills in training proved vitally necessary when a two-year-old child in the on-campus preschool program was choking on an orange slice. Silvia, one of the student interns from the school’s medical program, immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver to save the child’s life.
“I am so incredibly thankful to Silvia for her heroism,” said the two-year-old child’s mother.
Silvia learned how to perform the Heimlich maneuver through the school’s medical pathway offered in partnership with the Regional Occupational Program (R.O.P.). Valencia also has a partnership established with R.O.P. to offer the on-campus pre-school program. Valencia High School students can earn a certificate in Child Development by serving a two-year internship in the preschool program. The Child Development program also trains students to react in emergencies.
Silvia is enrolled in both programs and was at the right place with the right training.
“I am just grateful that I had the training and was able to help,” she said.
