Regarding Choice Transfers/Boundary Changes

  1. What is the difference between a “Choice” transfer and an “Inter-district” transfer?

A Choice transfer refers to a student who lives within the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified
    School District attendance area.

An Inter-district transfer refers to a student who lives outside the Placentia-Yorba Linda
    Unified School District attendance area.
    Inter-district students must renew their
    application each year.

  2. What is the duration of a Choice transfer?

Once a student who resides within the boundaries of PYLUSD has been accepted to their school of choice, they become a resident of that school and do not need to renew their transfer annually. The transfer is in effect through middle school. However, Choice transfer students must reapply upon entering high school.

Inter-district transfer students must renew their application each year.

  3. If my student is currently in ninth grade (08-09) and my school of residence changes upon the completion of the boundary process, can my student stay at their current high school for the following year?

Any current ninth grade student, whose school of residence changes and wishes to remain at their current high school, must apply for a Choice transfer. Transfer requests must be submitted within the designated transfer periods in order to be considered.

  4. My ninth grade student is currently attending high school on a Choice transfer. If our school boundary changes what school does he/she attend?

In this case a student has two options. The student may remain at their current school
under a Choice transfer without completing a new application. However, if they wish, they may attend their new school of residence. This student will need to inform their current school if he/she plans on changing schools.

  5. Is my student transfer request automatically approved?

No, transfer requests submitted during the transfer period are subject to space availability at the requested school.

  6. In an instance where transfer requests exceed space availability, how are students selected?

In any instance where the number of requests exceeds the space available, approval of
the transfers will be determined by a lottery process. Applications are not based on the
order they are received. Applications are given priority based on the criteria listed below.

The following students have priority within a transfer period:
    • If the parent of the student works at the school of choice.
    • If an older sibling currently attends the school of choice and will continue to
    • attend the year of the transfer request.
    • If a student is currently enrolled in ninth grade at their school of choice. (For 2009-2010 Choice application period only)

  7. If a student is in either eleventh or twelfth grade during the 2009-2010 school year,
does the high school boundary change apply?

No, high school boundary changes apply to students entering ninth or tenth grade in
    2009-2010 only.

  8. Where can I get a Choice application form?

Choice application forms are available only from the Child Welfare and Attendance office located at 1301 E. Orangethorpe Ave in Placentia. Completed applications must also be returned to the Child Welfare and Attendance office either by mail or in person.

If you have further questions regarding the choice transfer process, please contact the
Child Welfare and Attendance (CWA) office at 714-985-8670.

  9. When can high school students apply for a choice transfer?

    Application periods are as follows:

    1st application period (K-8 only):
    1/7/09 through 2/6/09

    2nd application period (K-12):
