| Frequently
Asked Questions
1. What is happening at the State level,
and how will this affect our local schools?
At long last, California has a budget. While this begins to address
the State’s $40 billion-plus budget deficit, the two-year deal
takes money away from schools in 2008-2009 and makes further cuts next
school year. For Placentia-Yorba Linda USD this means $5.5 million
in midyear cuts and an $8.6 million target in the 2009-2010 school year.
This situation is compounded after several consecutive years of cuts
which have affected the Placentia-Yorba Linda USD in reductions of nearly
$33 million.
2. Many rumors are circulating regarding
proposed cuts. Are these true?
The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District has not yet decided
on ANY cuts. As a proactive measure, the school district is first exploring
ways to bring in additional dollars and State flexibility options.
3. Can we use bond money to help during
the State’s financial mess?
No. Bond dollars may only be used to build and modernize schools.
4. What are the district’s thoughts
on fundraising to help during the crisis?
The school district is very grateful for such a supportive community.
However, funding staff is the district’s responsibility. This
also ensures equity among schools.
5. How can we help?
Tell your story. State lawmakers need to hear how reducing school district
budgets impact schools. California is ranked 47th of 50 states in funding.
Our school district continues to remind legislators that a stable source
of funding for education is needed.

Crisis and the impact on education?
Tips for an Effective Letter
- Identify yourself early in the letter, include that you are a constituent
and that you are writing on behalf of other individuals, if applicable.
- Give a reason for your letter in the first or second paragraph.
- Explain how the issue in question directly affects you, your community
or your family.
- Try to use as many relevant facts as possible and back them up with
sources, if available.
- Be specific about the issue.
- While you should make all the relevant key points, try to keep the
letter short. You should concentrate on one issue in your letter,
rather than addressing a number of different ones.
