Friday, November 21, 2008 The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District is proud to offer an outstanding elementary physical education program for first through sixth grade. The program is taught by trained specialists with the assistance of trained aides. Together they are assigned to several district elementary schools and teaching specifically structured lessons that are developmentally appropriate in skill development, wellness concepts, character education, and physical fitness. The goal of the program is for students to develop movement experiences and knowledge, fitness skills and positive character traits that will establish a healthy lifestyle. Fourth, fifth and sixth grade students keep a personal physical education notebook containing wellness information, fitness recording sheets and physical education tests are kept. Wellness topics include playground safety, the skeletal system, the muscular system, first aid, the circulatory system, the digestive system and the nervous system. Program Overview: The elementary physical education program is based on the California State Framework. It is designed to provide experiences in movement that enhance the physical, mental and social/emotional well-being of every student in grades 1 through 6 including special education students and English language learners. The first goal of Movement Skill and Movement Knowledge is accomplished by providing every child with the opportunity to explore, practice and master movement skills and knowledge appropriate for their developmental level. The selected activities provide the basis for learning and analyzing purposeful movement. The second goal deals with Self-Image and Personal Development and is implemented through developmentally appropriate movement experiences. An understanding of how they move and why they move contribute to the development of a unique mover who understands his/her own ability and appreciates the abilities of others. Students are encouraged to be confident risk takers, evaluators of personal abilities and realistic goal setters. The third goal of Social Development is achieved through activities
that will lead toward improved self-control, leadership roles and cooperative
behaviors. Activities are designed that will help students work together
in appropriate numbers so social skills will be develop. Teamwork and
sportsmanship are charteristics which are direct outcomes of this goal.
