State Seal of Civic Engagement


The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) is proud to announce its decision to award the new California State Seal of Civic Engagement (SSCE) to eligible high school seniors beginning with the Class of 2023. 

 
BACKGROUND: The State Seal of Civic Engagement recognizes high school graduates who have demonstrated excellence in civics education; an understanding of both the United States and California Constitutions as well as our democratic system of government; and actively participated in an impactful civic engagement project to serve the community. Recipients of this recognition will receive a gold seal on their diploma as well as a medallion to wear at graduation.
 
ADOPTION: PYLUSD developed local State Seal of Civic Engagement criteria in accordance with parameters set forth by the California State Board of Education. The PYLUSD Board of Education then approved the district’s criteria and plan for implementation on November 15, 2022. 

CRITERIA: To earn the State Seal of Civic Engagement, students must demonstrate:
 
Civic Proficiency (All required)
      • Social Science Scholarship with grades of C- or better in sophomore and junior coursework;
      • Excellent Citizenship with O/S citizenship marks and no more than one N/U;
      • Exemplary Character through a positive teacher recommendation; and 
Civic Engagement
  •  Participation in active research stemming from in classroom learning, personal interest, involvement in organization, or school program. 
  •  A call to action create a project for a targeted audience to make change.  
  •  Reflection on the impact and success your project had on the community
 
APPLICATION: High School seniors may contact site Coordinator for the State Seal of Civic Engagement application. 
 
TIMELINE: The deadline for seniors in the Class of 2023-24 to apply is 4:30 p.m. on March 6, 2024. At that time, all responses and teacher recommendations must be completed as the application process will close. No late applications or teacher recommendations will be accepted.
