Q. What are Supplemental Educational Services?
A. They are FREE tutoring services paid for by PYLUSD under the No Child Left Behind Act/Elementary and Secondary Education Act to help your child improve his/her skills in English Language Arts/Reading, Mathematics, and English language proficiency (for LEP students).
Q. Who is eligible for Supplemental Educational Services?
A. Students who qualify for the Free/Reduced Price Lunch Program for 2015-2016 and who attend a Title I school that is in the second year or more of Program Improvement are eligible to receive SES tutoring. The schools eligible for SES for the 2015-2016 school year are Melrose Elementary, Rio Vista Elementary, Ruby Drive Elementary, Topaz Elementary, Tynes Elementary, Kraemer Middle School and Valadez Middle School Academy.
Q. What do I have to do to receive these FREE tutoring services?
A. You must fill out an application, choose two different providers (tutoring companies), sign the application, and return it to your child’s school office or to the district office. We must have all of the required information on the application in order to process your application.
Q. What is a provider?
A. A provider is a state-approved tutoring company or organization that will tutor your child.
Q. How can I learn more about the providers?
A. To learn more about the providers, please plan to attend ONE of the Provider Information Meetings. All meetings will be held in the schools’ Multipurpose Rooms. See Important Dates page.
Q. When will my child be tutored?
A. Tutoring should begin in November and will end on or before March 31st, 2016. Most students will meet 1-2 days per week for 1-2 hours. Parents and tutors determine the tutoring schedules. Most sessions are held after school, in the evening, or on weekends.
Q. How many hours of tutoring will my child receive?
A. Each provider determines the number of tutoring hours they will offer. This information is available on the Provider Information page.
Q. How do I select a tutoring company for my child?
A. Please use the Choosing a Provider guide to assist you in selecting the tutoring service that is best for your child.
Q. Is transportation to SES tutoring provided?
A. No. Parents are responsible for providing any necessary transportation for tutoring sessions.
Q. How do I get an application?
A. You may pick up an application at one of the SES Information meetings, at your child’s school office, or you may contact Heather Reekstin at (714) 985-8479 or via email at [email protected].
Q. How do I know if my child has been accepted into the SES program?
A. If your child is selected to receive services this year, the tutoring company that you have chosen on your application will contact you in October or early November to set up a tutoring schedule. If your child is not selected, you will be notified by PYLUSD. If you are not contacted by January , please contact Heather Reekstin at (714) 985-8479 or at [email protected].
Q. What if my child does NOT qualify for Supplemental Educational Services or I do not want Supplemental Educational Services?
A. PYLUSD offers a variety of programs at your child’s school to assist children in need of educational assistance. Please contact your child’s school for further information.
Q. Who pays for Supplemental Educational Services?
A. PYLUSD, according to the NCLB/ESEA law, must reserve 20% of its total Title I allocation to pay for these services.
