Supplemental Educational Services
The former No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, now called the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, requires that school districts provide academic assistance such as tutoring to low-income students (as qualified by free/reduced meals in 2015-2016) that attend a Title I school that is in its second year or more of Program Improvement. The legislation also requires that school districts reserve 20% of their total Title I allocation to pay for these services. Therefore, all Supplemental Educational Services are free to eligible students. To learn more about Supplemental Educational Services please see the Questions and Answers section.
Supplemental Educational Services are offered outside of the regular school day, either before or after school, and sometimes on weekends. They are intended to help low-achieving students in reading, language arts, mathematics, and English language proficiency (for LEP students). Providers (tutoring companies) may tutor students at a community center, public library, private tutoring center, online through the Internet, or may come to your home. Some providers will also offer services on the school campus. Students may meet in small groups or one-to-one with a tutor. The State of California has approved over 200 organizations for 2015-2016 to provide these services. To see a list of all of the approved providers for the State of California please visit the California Department of Education website.
Twelve of these providers have chosen to contract with PYLUSD this year. To learn more about these providers, please see the Provider Information section of this website. You may also obtain more information about the SES program and the providers by attending an SES information meeting at your child’s school. Please see the Important Dates section for a schedule of the dates, times, and locations of these meetings.
