Happy New Year! We hope you have enjoyed your winter recess and are ready to return to learning across all Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) campuses tomorrow, January 3, 2022. Please read this message in its entirety as it contains important information about COVID-19 and keeping our campuses safe and healthy for all.
Symptomatic & COVID-19 Positive Individuals
Students who have tested positive for COVID-19 over winter recess and have already reported this information to the district have been given direction on a return date and should continue to follow the instructions provided by the district’s Health Services Team. Students who have had an onset of COVID-19 symptoms or tested positive over the past 10 days (on or after December 24, 2021), but have not reported symptoms or a positive case should stay home, report the symptoms or positive case to their school’s attendance line, and wait for further instructions.
Employees must notify the Human Resources Department if they have tested positive or currently have symptoms.
COVID-19 symptoms include fever (≥100.4°F), congestion/runny nose, nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, sore throat, headache, fatigue/muscle or body aches, cough, difficulty breathing, and/or loss of taste or smell. It is crucial that students, staff, and families adhere to these guidelines.
Free Tests for Students
As we shared earlier this week, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) recently announced that free COVID-19 at-home test kits will be made available to all K-12 public school students as they return to school following winter recess.
The Orange County Department of Education is currently working with all school districts in Orange County to distribute the COVID-19 test kits but has not yet received them from CDPH. They anticipate receiving the kits on Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. The district will continue to update families with more information about when the kits will be available for local pick up.
It is important to reiterate that there is no statewide testing mandate for students to return to school. The state is not requiring a documented negative test to return to the classroom. These efforts are simply meant to increase access to optional tests for K-12 public school students at no cost.
Independent Study
With the national rise in COVID-19 cases, some families have asked about the option of keeping their student(s) home from school out of an abundance of caution. However, short-term independent study is only available to students who have to quarantine due to a COVID-19 close contact or positive case. Students and families who wish to access their instruction in an alternative setting are encouraged to consider one of the district’s alternative schools including Buena Vista Virtual Academy, a K-12 online school, and Parkview School, a TK-12 homeschool program.
Other Mitigating Measures
The district’s Return to School Plan for the 2021-2022 School Year, which is available to view online at www.pylusd.org/returntoschool, outlines the many health and safety measures that continue to be in place on PYLUSD campuses, based on guidance from CDPH and OCHCA. This includes universal masking while indoors, additional hand washing and sanitizing stations across all campuses, HEPA air purifiers in every classroom, and much more. All COVID-19 positive cases among students and staff will continue to be reflected on the district’s COVID-19 Dashboard online at www.pylusd.org/dashboard.Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to having our students and staff back on our campuses tomorrow.

Individuos sintomáticos y positivos para COVID-19
Los estudiantes que dieron positivo por COVID-19 durante el recreo de invierno y ya han reportado esta información al distrito han recibido instrucciones en una fecha de regreso y deben continuar siguiendo las instrucciones proporcionadas por el Equipo de Servicios de Salud del distrito. Los estudiantes que han tenido un inicio de síntomas de COVID-19 o han dado positivo en los últimos 10 días (el 24 de diciembre de 2021 o después), pero no han informado síntomas o un caso positivo deben quedarse en casa, informar los síntomas o el caso positivo a su línea de asistencia de la escuela y espere más instrucciones.

Pruebas gratuitas para estudiantes
Como compartimos a principios de esta semana, el Departamento de Salud Pública de California (CDPH, por sus siglas en inglés) anunció recientemente que todos los estudiantes de escuelas públicas K-12 tendrán a su disposición kits de prueba de COVID-19 gratuitos en el hogar cuando regresen a la escuela después del receso de invierno.
El Departamento de Educación del Condado de Orange está trabajando actualmente con todos los distritos escolares del Condado de Orange para distribuir los kits de prueba COVID-19, pero aún no los ha recibido del CDPH. Anticipan recibir los kits el martes o miércoles de esta semana. El distrito continuará actualizando a las familias con más información sobre cuándo estarán disponibles los kits para su recogida local.
Es importante reiterar que no existe un mandato de evaluación en todo el estado para que los estudiantes regresen a la escuela.
